Exhibition Reception: During the Veteran Art Summit November 8, 2026
Creative Rebellion celebrates expressions of war resistance from around the world while highlighting Chicago's role in the international struggle for peace and justice. The exhibition presents archival materials from the legendary Chicago antiwar veteran organizer Barry Romo alongside a spectrum of contemporary artworks—from quilts and soft sculptures to family videos and propaganda prints—that show the many ways artists craft solidarity and defy colonial power. Collectively, the artworks invite engagement, inspire action, and demand a more peaceful and just future.
Featuring artists Ismail Abu Hatab, Cog*nate Collective, Jose deVera, Sabba Elahi, William Estrada, Chitra Ganesh, Jose Garza, Leon Golub, Emily Jacir, Ruth Kaneko (Kanaka Wahine), Josh MacPhee, Huong Ngo, Amanda Raquel Dorval (Nuyorican-Dominican), Charlie Reynolds, Gregory Rick, Chip Thomas, archival materials from Vietnam Veterans Against the War, the Albert Goodman Collection, and more.

Creative Rebellion is one of the five featured exhibitions of the 2026 Veteran Art Triennial, RESISTING THE LONG WAR curated by Aaron Hughes, Mohamed Mehdi, and Amber Zora. The Triennial highlights artists’ creative defiance to war and militarism. The featured artworks lift up overlapping legacies of war resistance, presenting alternative visions of peace, healing, and justice generated by diverse communities impacted by war.
Additional Triennial exhibitions are at the Chicago Cultural Center, Elmhurst Art Museum, Hyde Park Art Center, and Walls Turned Sideways. The exhibition receptions will take place during the Veteran Art Summit November 5-8, 2026.
